Glass Mountain was founded by Dorthy Gosich Price
on February 26, 1968.
Dorothy was physically
challenged, and found that it was difficult finding
programs in 1968 that assisted those with physical handicaps,
and information on organizations that offered
assistance was limited. So she did what 'any woman
with a cause' would do -- she started her own organization,
"Glass Mountain",
to help those with physical challenges "Get back
into the main-stream of society".
Glass Mountain -- the name:
"We overcome mountains of obstacles by looking through
the glass to see the solution on the other side."
GMI has undergone different cycles of growth through
the years. In times past we had as many as 75 persons
attending our meetings and activities, but today though
our numbers have diminished, the spirit of our program
continues. We have monthly general meetings where we
have guest speakers that present information that is
useful and of interest to our members. You may peruse
our meeting
topics of prior years
to see what we do.
For several years, GMI held their meetings at the
Rehabilitation Institue of Orange (RIO). And in
1998 we moved to our current facility at the Mariposa
Villa Apartment complex in Irvine, California.
One item of distinction which GMI is involved, is
a perpetual scholarship that GMI funded at Orange Coast College,
where a student with a disability is awarded a cash
scholarship each year, to assist in helping them with
their education. Thirteen students have now benefitted
from this scholarship program.
